ワンポイント英会話　～人の年代を英語で言おう　第2回～

前回のワンポイント英会話では、人の年代を英語で表現する方法を勉強しました。

■今回のワンポイント
　　今回のワンポイント英会話は、会話中の話に対する適切な対応表現を紹
　介したいと思います。
　１　相手の良いニュースに対して
　　　That's wonderful news! That's great!
　　　Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!
　　このような表現は次のように使えます。
　　A: My son passed the entrance exam to Takenoko Music Academy.
　　B: Thatﾕs great!
　　A: I quit smoking last year.
　　B: Congratulations!

2　 相手の悪いニュースに対して
　　　That's too bad! What a shame! What a pity!
　　　例えば、次のような使い方があります。
　　　A. Our softball team lost the game yesterday.
　　　B: What a shame!
　　　（「shame」は「恥じ」という意味もありますが、「What a shame!」
　　　 とは、「残念でした」という意味です。）
　　　A: I lost my new umbrella.
　　　B: Oh, that's too bad!

　3　相手の親戚や友達の病気、怪我、死のニュースに対して
　　　I'm sorry to hear that.
　　　これは次のように使えます。
　　　A: My grandmother died last week.
　　　B: Oh, Iﾕm sorry to hear that.
　　　A: My brother had a traffic accident and will be in the hospital for 2 weeks.
　　　B: Iﾕm sorry to hear that.

　4　相手の話しを聞く時の合図
　　　Really? I see. Uh-huh　（「uh-huh」は、「アー・ハ」に少し聞こえますが、
　　 　　　　　　　　　　　　　　 正しい発音は [_ `h_] です。）
　　　次の例文をごらんください。
　　　A: I bought my new shoes at The Shoe Plaza.
　　　B: Really?
　　　A: Yes, they were on sale.
　　　（on sale = 特価販売、　for sale = 売り物として）

　5　答える前に考える時
　　　Well...　Hmm... 　Let's see. Let me see.
　　　例えば、次のように使えます。
　　　A: Are you going to the party next Friday?
　　　B: Well, I want to go, but I don't know yet.
　　　A: Do you know your sonﾕs shoe size?
　　　B: Let me see. I think itﾕs 23.

　6　相手の話しに驚きを示す時
　　　You're kidding! No way! Really?!
　　　A: Jack won a digital camera in a bingo game yesterday.
　　　B: Really?!
　　　A: Yes, he gave it to his sister.
　　　（「Really?!」には「yes」か「no」の答えがいります。）
　　　A: I'm going to Hawaii for two weeks.
　　　B: No way!
　　　A: It's true. My brother is studying there and I'm going to stay at his
　　　　apartment.

■このように相手の話しにうまく反応できるようになれば、どう答えればいいかが
